City University’s Extreme Environments Programme: Antarctica Presented by the School of Creative Media
The Extreme Environments programme links to City University’s groundbreaking Discovery-enriched Curriculum. This year the University-wide initiative brings students to one of the most remarkable science sites on the planet: Antarctica.
The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students will carry out research in the remote science stations of environmentally-significant Antarctica to create media art and design projects that offer new approaches to understanding climate change and sustainable solutions.
Total number of projects : 14
Total funds raised : US$25,929
CURATED PROJECTS
THE WIND: How Do You Capture The Wind?
Project by Chow Yun Fu, Vladimir A. Baskov
The team will collect multi-direction sound recordings and anemometric readings of the Patagonian and Antarctica winds. Their studies will focus on the katabatics, powerful gravity-driven wind gusts generated by...
THE LICHEN: How Do You Survive With No Ozone?
Project by WONG Man Yi Mani, LO Tsz Ning Twinnie
As our ozone layer increasingly thins over Antarctica, the UV-B radiation intensifies on the surface influencing the growth of its already-struggling vegetation. To survive, some lichens possess antioxidants that protect...
THE PENGUINS: How Do Penguins Stay Warm?
Project by Chan Yik Hong, Chak Gan Cheong, Wong Chun Kit
The team will research the phenomenon of The Penguin Wave, a group cluster behavior that results in heat generation. Using thermal vision cameras at various rookeries, the team will detect penguin waddle...
THE PRISONERS: What’s It Like To Live So Isolated?
Project by Lee Ka Ki, Tsang Hoi Yu
By studying and contrasting Tierra Del Fuego’s notorious role as a penal colony and Antarctica’s unique political structure of international agreement, the team will explore criminological and environmental issues related...
THE TREES: How Environmental Forces As Compared To Business Strategies?
Project by Au Pui Yee, Chan Hoi Yin Heidi
Using an analysis of flag trees, a Patagonian phenomenon where trees are misshaped into complex forms by wind and other environmental forces, the team will consider the organic systems as models for...
Exploring Antarctica through Art and Science
Project by Scott Hessels and students
The Antarctica Expedition and Exhibition explores how student artists, researchers and scientists working together can collect and interpret environmental data using new forms of creativity and visualization. Students...
THE AURORA: Can I Walk Around In The Sky?
Project by Anantika Mehra, Mubarak Marafa
Using immersive 3-D projection, the team will use procedural and generative animation applied to a range of datasets to recreate the experience of an Aurora Australis, Antarctica’s night sky display of solar flares interacting with...
THE NUMBERS: Can You Write This Down?
Project by Sung Pui Yin, Debarun Dhar, Wu Chung Man
The team will act as the statisticians for the entire project—collecting, analyzing and displaying data from everyone and everything ranging from food intake to photos taken to messages home. Matched with chemical and...
THE MICROORGANISMS: How Do You Live Between Sea and Fresh Water?
Project by Tse Sau Man, Liao Shun, Shen Xiao Yan
The team will utilize microbiology, time-lapse microscopy, DNA sequencing and programming to study the life cycle and biological footprints of microorganism meta-populations in Hong Kong, Argentina and Antarctica...
THE ICEBERGS: How’s An Iceberg built?
Project by Ngan Tsz Yui Angie
